A slow leak is the tire problem that wastes the most time, because it never forces a decision. You top it up, it is fine for a week, you top it up again, and four months later you are still doing it. It also hides behind the weather here in a way that is worth understanding before you spend money on it.
Chattanooga's winter is built to make a tire look like it is leaking when it is not
Look at the shape of the cold at Chattanooga Lovell Field in the 1991-2020 NOAA normals. 58.3 days a year have a minimum below 32F. Only 2.6 days a year have a maximum below 32F.
That is the signature of a place that freezes overnight and thaws by lunchtime. By month, the normal count of days with a minimum below freezing runs January 17.4, February 11.8, March 5.6, April 0.9, October 0.3, November 6.5, December 15.9. And the normal daily maximum in those same months is well clear of freezing: January 50.2F, February 54.8F, March 63.7F, November 62.3F, December 52.1F.
So through a Chattanooga winter the air in your tires is cycling hard, most days, in both directions. Air pressure falls when air gets colder. The practical result is a dashboard warning at seven in the morning that has gone away by two in the afternoon, on a tire with nothing wrong with it — and, far more annoyingly, the same pattern on a tire that genuinely is leaking. The weather masks the fault.
The measured version of that cycling is the thing this city runs on. Counting days in the Lovell Field daily record where the minimum fell below 32F and the maximum rose above 32F — one full freeze-thaw crossing — the thirty years 1996 to 2025 average 46.1 such days a year, with a median of 49.5 and a range from 28 in 2019 and again in 2020 to 68 in 1996.
One note on that figure, because we would rather you trusted the rest of the site. The 46.1 is counted from the daily record using a same-day definition we applied ourselves. It is not a published index, and it is not comparable with crossing counts derived from monthly normals by other methods, including the one on our own Pittsburgh pages. We will not rank Chattanooga against another city on it and neither should anyone else.
How to tell the weather from a real leak
The test is boring and it works: check the pressures cold, at the same time of day, twice a week apart, against the number on the door placard rather than the number on the tire sidewall. Where the placard is and how to read it covers that.
- All four down by a similar small amount over a cold snap is the weather, and it wants air, not a repair.
- One tire down repeatedly while the other three hold is a leak, and it will not fix itself.
- A tire that goes soft in a day is not a slow leak, it is a fast one, and it wants attention now rather than on Saturday. Flat tire repair is the page for that.
The four things that are usually behind it
In rough order of how often they turn out to be the cause:
- A small tread puncture you cannot see. A roofing nail or a staple that has sealed itself well enough to leak slowly rather than quickly. Repairable if it is in the tread area and no larger than a quarter of an inch.
- The valve stem. Rubber stems perish, and the failure is gradual. This is the cheapest cause and the most commonly missed. A leaking valve stem covers the symptom.
- The bead seal, where the tire meets the rim. Corrosion on an alloy wheel lifts the seal fractionally and the tire weeps air all round the edge. Cleaning and re-seating the bead fixes it; a plug will not, because there is no hole.
- The TPMS sensor itself, on vehicles with direct sensors mounted inside the wheel. The sensor body and its seal are a possible leak path, and a failing sensor can also report fine while the tire loses air.
Numbers three and four are the reason a slow leak needs the tire off the wheel rather than a squirt of soapy water at the kerb. Two of the four common causes are not holes, so there is nothing for a plug to fill.
What a repair actually involves, and what it cannot cover
The rules are the US Tire Manufacturers Association's. Tread area only, nothing wider than a quarter of an inch, tire off the wheel so the inner liner can be inspected, and a plug and a patch together. Sidewall and shoulder damage is not repairable by anyone.
A slow leak that turns out to be bead corrosion or a valve stem is a different job from a puncture and we will tell you which one it is at the car. What we will not do is fit a plug from the outside and call it done.
Two limits worth knowing before you book. We do not fit tires bought elsewhere, and we do not sell used tires. And TPMS: a reset or relearn is included where the vehicle supports it at the roadside. A failed sensor needs a part, which we fit where it is in local stock, and if a sensor fails during fitting we tell you before anything is charged. What a mobile visit covers and how to prepare for one have the rest.
The summer half of the same problem
The heat is milder here than the reputation of the south suggests, but it is not nothing. The 1991-2020 normals at Lovell Field give 47.7 days a year at or above 90F and 1.0 day at or above 100F, with the 90F days concentrated in June 9.7, July 16.6 and August 15.2. Through 17 September 2026, the last day in the published daily series, the year had already recorded 70 days at or above 90F and 6 at or above 100F against those normals.
A tire that has been run under-inflated all winter has been flexing more than it should for months by the time that heat arrives. The pressure check is a January job as much as a July one.
Who else does this here
Nobody local publishes a price for it. The Tire Rack directory for ZIP 37421 lists twelve recommended installers and every one is a fixed shop; its own mobile-coverage endpoint returns an empty string for four Chattanooga ZIP codes and for Fort Oglethorpe across the Georgia line. What the twelve do publish is their fitting rate cards, and a couple of lines in those are worth knowing if you end up at one of them for a sensor: Discount Tire lists a TPMS rebuild kit at no charge across its three locations in this market, Firestone lists one at $5.00, Precision Tune at $14.95 and Quality Tire at $2.50, all read 2026-09-20 on Tire Rack's own rate-card panels. A rebuild kit is the seal and hardware, not the sensor.
Mobile tire repair in Chattanooga has the full picture of who operates here, what tire repair costs in Chattanooga has all twelve rate cards with the municipality each one sits in, who is available now has the published hours, and our Chattanooga service area has the coverage.
Nationally: a tire losing air with no nail in it, a leaking valve stem, repair or replace, what tire repair costs, mobile versus a tire shop, how it works and our pricing.
Our price: $145 for the first tire
A mobile puncture repair on one tire is $145, and $50 for each additional tire in the same visit. That is the price, not an estimate and not a starting figure. It covers getting to the car, the wheel off, the tire demounted and inspected from the inside, a plug and patch fitted the way the tire industry requires, remounting, rebalancing, a TPMS reset where the vehicle supports it, and the wheel back on. There is no separate call-out fee.
If the leak turns out not to be repairable — sidewall damage, a separation, a tire that has been run soft for too long — we tell you on the spot. The inspection is charged, because establishing it means travelling to the car, taking the wheel off and the tire off the rim. The repair is not charged, because it was not done.
Questions people ask
- My light comes on in the morning and goes off by the afternoon. Is that a leak? Often it is the weather. Chattanooga normals give 58.3 nights a year below freezing against only 2.6 days that stay below freezing, so the air in your tires is cycling hard and the pressure with it. Check all four cold, twice, a week apart. One tire dropping while three hold is a leak.
- How slow is a slow leak? Slow enough that you top it up rather than fix it. That is the definition that matters, because it is the one that costs you a tire eventually.
- Can a leak be repaired if it is not a puncture? Sometimes, and it is a different job. Bead corrosion is cleaned and re-seated; a perished valve stem is replaced. Neither is a plug, which is why the tire has to come off the wheel to find out which one you have.
- Do you replace TPMS sensors? Where the part is in local stock. A reset or relearn is included where the vehicle supports it at the roadside, and if a sensor fails during fitting we tell you before anything is charged.
- Is it worth repairing an old tire? We take a tread depth and read the DOT date code at every visit and give you both, because nothing in Tennessee's vehicle equipment chapter sets a tread figure and no scheduled check exists in Hamilton County to catch it. When to replace your tires covers where the line falls.
- Do you fit tires I bought elsewhere? No. We supply the tires we fit.
