Where we work

A nail in your tire in Boise

Where the nail sits decides everything, and Idaho gives you no tread number to check it against. What the statute does give you is a five-day roadside order.

Start with the tire

What do you need?

How many tires?

No account needed.

A nail is the best kind of tire problem to have. It is usually repairable, and it usually announces itself while the car is parked rather than at seventy on the connector. Whether it is repairable comes down to two things you can check in thirty seconds and one thing nobody can check without taking the tire off the wheel.

Leave it in

The first instinct is to pull it out. Do not. The nail is partially sealing the hole it made, and removing it turns a slow leak into a fast one, sometimes into a flat before you have found a hose.

If the tire is holding pressure, leave the nail alone, note roughly where it is, and book. If it is already soft, do not drive on it further than you must: a tire run flat wrecks its own sidewall, and that is the one kind of damage nobody can repair.

Where it sits decides almost everything

Look at the tire from the side, at where the nail goes in.

  • Tread area — the flat band that touches the road. A puncture here is repairable if it is no larger than a quarter of an inch. This is the common case and the one we are set up for.
  • Shoulder — the curved corner between the tread and the sidewall. Not repairable. The shoulder flexes constantly and no patch survives there.
  • Sidewall — the smooth vertical face. Not repairable, by us or by anyone, at any price.

Those limits come from the US Tire Manufacturers Association, not from us.

The part nobody can judge from outside

The tire has to come off the wheel. That is not an upsell, it is the standard. The inner liner has to be inspected, because a nail that looks tidy from the tread side may have been walking around inside the casing for a fortnight, and a tire that has been run soft can be delaminated internally while looking untouched from the outside.

The repair itself is a plug and a patch together, fitted from the inside. A five-minute plug jammed in from the outside without demounting the tire is not a repair under the standard; it is a way to sell you the same tire twice.

Because the inspection is the work, we charge for it even when the answer is no. You pay the inspection and not the repair, and we tell you before you decide anything about replacing the tire.

In Idaho there is no number to check the rest of the tire against

Here is the local wrinkle, and it is a legal one worth getting right.

In most states a nail in a tire that is already close to the wear bars raises a second question: is the tire still legal? In Idaho that question has no answer, because Idaho Code Title 49 sets no minimum tread depth for a passenger car. All twenty-four chapters were downloaded and text-searched on 2026-09-20 and there is no tread rule anywhere in the title. The 2/32 of an inch figure that every national tire page quotes is a tire-industry and federal-commercial convention. In Idaho it is not state law.

What exists instead is Idaho Code 49-235, which lets an officer who finds a vehicle "in an unsafe condition" issue a written notice requiring "a certificate of inspection and approval for the vehicle be obtained within five (5) days", and subsection (3) which says the vehicle may not be operated until it has been put right. A judgement at the roadside, not a measurement against a published number. The whole story is here, and it matters on this page for one practical reason: nobody is going to measure your tread for you on a schedule, so when we have the wheel off we measure it and tell you the number.

What is on the roads here, and what we are not going to claim

People ask whether Boise's roads are the reason. We are not going to tell you they are, because nobody has measured that and we are not inventing a mechanism.

What is published is that the Ada County Highway District — not the city — maintains every street in the county, and that its street services include "street sweeping, pothole filling, chip sealing, and snow plowing". Chip sealing is a summer programme here, and loose chip is the surface treatment a Boise driver is most likely to notice.

And that is where we stop. No lane-mile count, schedule or aggregate specification for Boise chip sealing was published anywhere we could read on 2026-09-20, so we are not going to describe what it does to a tire or a windscreen. Idaho does not publish a pothole or service-request dataset for Boise either, so there is no complaint curve to show you. The road ownership story is on the flat tire page, along with ACHD's own account of the freeze-thaw cycle.

If it turns into a replacement

Two things to know before the invoice, both of them local.

The tax lands on the tire and not on the work. Idaho's sales tax rate is 6 percent, and on a live Boise mobile tire price screen read on 2026-09-20 the effective rate was exactly 6.00 percent of the tire sub-total at two different quantities, with nothing charged on the fitting, call-out and disposal lines. The cost page shows that arithmetic in full.

And there is no Idaho state waste-tire fee. Nothing in Title 49 creates a tire disposal or recycling charge. Where you see a disposal line on a Boise invoice it is a company price, not a state pass-through. For comparison, the one Boise-area mobile seller that publishes an itemised total charges $6.50 a tire for it; the Tire Choice storefront at 1404 S Orchard St publishes disposal as free on its Tire Rack rate card.

We supply the tires we fit. We do not mount tires bought elsewhere, and we do not sell used tires — which in a state with no inspection and no tread rule matters more than usual, because a part-worn tire carries somebody else's history and nobody was ever required to check it.

Where to go next

Mobile tire repair in Boise covers the visit and who else is out there. A flat covers the urgent case, a slow leak covers a tire losing air with nothing in it, what it costs covers the money and who is open today covers the hours.

On Idaho law: no inspection and the five-day order and the studded tire window. On access: hillside addresses.

Nationally: can a nail in a tire be repaired, plug versus patch, a tire losing air with no nail, a bubble in the tread, repair or replace, free flat tire repair offers and what tire repair costs. Our Boise service area covers where we come.

Our price: $145 for the first tire

A mobile puncture repair on one tire is $145, and $50 for each additional tire in the same visit. No separate call-out fee. It covers getting to the car, the wheel off, the tire demounted and inspected from the inside, a plug and patch fitted the way the tire industry requires, remounting, rebalancing, a TPMS reset where the vehicle supports it, and the wheel back on.

If the nail turns out to have landed in the shoulder, or to have done internal damage, we tell you on the spot. The inspection is charged; the repair is not, because it did not happen.

One local comparison, carefully stated. The only business in this metro that publishes a price for a flat is 66 Mobile Auto Repair of Boise, whose page reads "Mobile Flat Tire Assist Starts @ $185." That is a starts-at figure covering a bundle its own subtitle defines as "Tire Repair | Install Spare | Replace Tire". It is not a plug-and-patch rate, and we are not going to present it as one.

Questions people ask

  • Should I pull the nail out? No. It is partly sealing the hole. Leave it, note where it is, and book.
  • Can a nail in the shoulder be repaired? No. Only the tread area is repairable, and only up to a quarter of an inch. The shoulder and the sidewall are out under the US Tire Manufacturers Association standard.
  • Is my tire illegal in Idaho if the tread is low? There is no Idaho tread-depth standard to be below. Title 49 contains no tread rule for a passenger car. What exists is 49-235, under which an officer may order an unsafe vehicle put right and a certificate obtained within five days, and the vehicle may not be driven in the meantime.
  • Can you tell over the phone? We can tell you whether it is worth a visit. We cannot tell you it is repairable, because that needs the tire off the wheel and the inner liner inspected.
  • What is the disposal charge on a Boise invoice? A company price, not a state fee. Nothing in Idaho Code Title 49 creates a waste-tire charge.
  • Do you fit tires I bought elsewhere? No, and we do not sell used tires. We supply the tires we fit.
