Free flat tire repair: when it is actually free

Several national chains repair punctures at no charge. It is a real offer and worth using. It also comes with three conditions that decide whether it applies to you, and none of them are hidden — they are just rarely stated together.

The offer

Les Schwab repairs flats free for the life of the tires you bought from them. Discount Tire and several other chains do the same on their own tires. The terms as recorded on 2026-09-20 are the same shape everywhere: free repair, on tires they sold, at their store.

The three conditions

1. It has to be their tire. The offer follows the purchase, not the car. A tire bought online, fitted by someone else, or already on the car when you bought it is not covered.

2. The car has to get there. A free repair at a store is free only if the car can be driven to it. That means a usable spare, a working inflator kit, or a tow. A tow costs more than any repair on this page.

3. They decide whether it is repairable. Free applies to a repair. If the damage is in the sidewall or shoulder, larger than a quarter of an inch, or the tire was driven on flat, there is no repair to do free — there is a tire to buy. See what can be repaired.

The question worth asking at the counter

"Are you taking the tire off the wheel?"

A correct repair means demounting the tire and fitting a plug-and-patch unit from the inside. A plug pushed in from the outside without removing the tire is a get-home measure, not a repair, and it is faster and cheaper for whoever is doing it free. Free work done correctly is the best price in this market. Free work done as an outside plug is a tire you will be replacing sooner.

When free does not reach you

• The tire did not come from that chain.
• The car will not move, and no spare is fitted.
• There is no branch near you, or not one open now.
• The tire is not repairable, so the free offer has nothing to apply to.
