ZIP 37412 is not the City of Chattanooga. It covers the City of East Ridge, a separately incorporated municipality sitting on the Georgia line, and that one fact is the reason the most striking number we hold about this place tells you nothing at all about your street.

39 against 1,709, and what it does not mean

We counted the City of Chattanooga's own pothole service request feed with a spatial query, nine full years from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2023. Inside ZCTA 37412 there are 39 requests. Inside ZCTA 37411 next door, Brainerd, over exactly the same nine years and from exactly the same feed, there are 1,709.

That is a ratio worth being very careful with, so here is the careful version.

It is not a measurement of East Ridge asphalt. It is a measurement of which city's reporting channel a resident's complaint lands in, and 37412 is a different city. A count drawn from the City of Chattanooga's 311 feed is not a like-for-like measure of a street the City of Chattanooga does not appear in that feed for.

We did not read East Ridge's own public works arrangements, so we are not going to describe them, and we are not going to tell you the two towns fix roads differently. What we can tell you is what the two numbers are, over the same series and the same nine years, and that one of them is drawn over a municipal boundary. If you want to know the state of your block in East Ridge, look at your block. The city data cannot answer it and neither can we from a desk.

Who lives here and what they drive

ZCTA 37412 holds 21,864 residents in 9,505 occupied housing units, 57.7% owner-occupied and 42.3% renter, with a median unit in the 1960s build band across 8.66 square miles (2024 Census Gazetteer). 68.8% of units are one-unit detached.

We use that detached share as a proxy for off-street space and label it as one, because it is the only thing available: the American Community Survey carries no garage or driveway variable and nobody here publishes a garage count. For scale, the City of Chattanooga's own figure is 57.6% one-unit detached. East Ridge's housing stock leans further towards the detached house than the city's does, which usually means a drive to work beside — but "usually" is doing real work in that sentence, so we ask at booking.

73.3% drive alone to work, 9.9% carpool, 0.9% take public transport, 2.5% walk or cycle and 12.4% work at home. 6.2% of households keep no vehicle, 40.6% one, 35.7% two and 17.6% three or more. The mean commute is 20.8 minutes (derived: ACS table B08013 aggregate travel time over the workers in table B08301 less those who worked at home, on a base of 11,153).

The City of East Ridge as a place, rather than as a ZIP approximation, measures 22,070 people with 73.1% driving alone and 6.1% of households keeping no vehicle. The two geographies are close enough that either tells the same story and different enough that we name which one each figure comes from.

Ground level at this ZCTA's published Census internal point is 670 feet (USGS 3DEP one-metre elevation query, read 2026-09-20). That is the elevation of one published point, not a neighbourhood average, and it is within a few feet of downtown Chattanooga's 676.5. This is the flat end of the metro.

Tire Rack runs a ZIP lookup that returns which mobile installation programme, if any, covers an address. We called it for 37412 on 2026-09-20. It returned [{"mobileInstallerType":""}] — an empty string, not a programme name. For comparison the same endpoint returns DTMI for Dallas 75206 and TRMI for Atlanta 30306 on the same day.

Discount Tire publishes the full list of stores that do its mobile installation. We counted it on 2026-09-20: 84 stores across exactly 8 states — Arizona 19, Florida 4, Illinois 14, Minnesota 3, Missouri 2, North Carolina 1, South Carolina 2, Texas 39. Tennessee is not on it. Georgia is not on it. Discount Tire has a store on Battlefield Parkway in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, a few minutes from here, and that store does not do mobile work either.

So when someone in East Ridge searches for a van, the national programmes that advertise one are not the answer. They are not here.

Crossing the line, and what it costs

Tire Rack's recommended-installer directory for this corner of the metro lists twelve shops, and because East Ridge sits against Georgia the geography inside that list is worth reading before the prices are. Two of the twelve are in Georgia: Discount Tire at 2221 Battlefield Parkway, Fort Oglethorpe, at $116.00 for the four-tire installation Tire Rack prices, and Sexton's Automotive at 5883 Hwy 41, Ringgold, at $216.00 — the dearest of the twelve. All twelve totals are Tire Rack's own quote for one configuration, a 2020 Toyota RAV4 AWD LE on 225/65R17 Michelin CrossClimate2, read 2026-09-20. A different size changes several of those cards.

Not one of the twelve is a mobile installer. The directory's own legend carries a "Mobile Installer" badge and nothing in this market wears it.

What Tennessee adds to the invoice

Two Tennessee rules change what an East Ridge invoice looks like, and both are worth knowing before you compare a number here with a number from another state.

Labour on a car is taxable. Department of Revenue guidance SUT-22, updated 27 March 2025: "A charge for labor performed on tangible personal property (e.g., car repair, lawn mower repair, etc.) is subject to sales tax." A fitting charge is not a tax-free line item in Tennessee the way it is in some states.

New tires carry a statutory fee. Guidance OTF-6: sales of new tires for road vehicles "are subject to a pre-disposal fee in the amount of $1.35 per tire", imposed on the business making the retail sale. Guidance OTF-13 adds that if the dealer passes it on, "sales tax will be applicable to the fee whether the fee is included in the tire's selling price or separately itemized on the customer's invoice."

The rate itself we publish in its parts rather than as one number, because the two parts come from two different pages. The Department of Revenue states the general state rate as 7%. The Hamilton County Clerk states the local rate as 2.25%. 7.00 plus 2.25 is 9.25, and that addition is ours, not a rate quoted from either source.

Where we work here

Level, paved, legal ground with room to work at one corner of the car, and room for a van. That is the whole requirement, and on this side of the metro it is usually easy.

It is worth knowing what the bar looks like when somebody else writes it down. Tire Rack publishes the standard its own vans work to: "We require a flat, paved surface with 6 feet of clearance around your vehicle along with enough space for our installation van. A minimum of 10 feet of vertical clearance is also required." A 1960s East Ridge drive normally clears that without anyone thinking about it. A carport does not always clear the ten feet, so tell us if that is where the car lives.
