Pothole tire damage in Chicago

A pothole strike does its damage in a fraction of a second, and most of what it breaks is invisible from the driver's seat. The tire that looks fine at the kerb can be finished. The tire with a gash in the tread can sometimes be saved. You cannot tell which is which by looking, and neither can anyone else.

What to check before you do anything else

Pull over somewhere safe and look at the wheel you hit on, then at the other three.

A bulge or bubble in the sidewall. The internal belt has separated. The tire is done. 625 ILCS 5/12-405(d) deems a tire unsafe for any bulge, knot or separation, and for any part of a ply or cord showing.

A cut or a pinched line low on the sidewall. Same answer. Nothing in a sidewall is repairable under the US Tire Manufacturers Association standard.

A bent or cracked wheel. Alloy wheels crack rather than fold. A tire that starts losing air after an impact with no mark on it anywhere is very often the rim, not the tire. Tire losing air with no nail in it covers the rest of that list.

Nothing visible, but the pressure is falling. Impact damage hides inside. Finding it means demounting the tire and inspecting the inner liner, which the repair standard requires before any repair anyway.

The car pulling, or the wheel sitting off-centre. That is suspension or alignment, and we do not do alignment.

How bad it actually is here, in the city's own numbers

Chicago's 311 system recorded 371,797 street pothole complaints across the seven full years 2019 to 2025. Ranked by month of submission over that period, March is the peak at 58,454 and November the trough at 13,591. February through May carries 187,232 reports, 50.4 percent of the year in four months.

The alleys run on their own clock. The 69,783 alley pothole complaints over the same seven years peak in April, a month after the streets, and stay high through the summer while the street curve falls away.

Ranked across all 77 community areas for 2019 to 2025, the Near West Side recorded the most street pothole complaints at 13,214, then West Town at 12,378, Austin at 10,693, Irving Park at 10,177 and Logan Square at 9,797. The fewest of all 77 was Oakland at 479. Ranking every street name in the same data, Western leads at 8,568 and Ashland follows at 5,423, though that ranking is not adjusted for length, and Western and Ashland are two of the longest continuous streets in the city, which is much of why they top it.

These are complaints, not potholes, and they are not adjusted for population or road miles. They still tell you when the season is.

What the city does about it

Chicago patched 260,883 potholes on 23,305 blocks between 1 January and 18 September 2026. For those blocks the time from request to completion had a median of 5.5 days and a mean of 12.7. 36.4 percent were done within 3 days, 58.2 percent within 7 and 88.4 percent within 30, with a 90th percentile of 34 days. The gap between median and mean is a long tail, not a slow service.

One Illinois point on replacement. 625 ILCS 5/12-405(e)(2) makes it unlawful to sell, lease or offer a tire with less than 3/32 of an inch of tread, while 12-405(d)(5) puts the unsafe-to-drive line at 2/32.
