Mobile tire service in Rogers Park, Chicago

Mostly one car, and mostly rented housing

What we need on the ground

Legal, level, paved, with room to work at one corner of the car. Rogers Park is flat, so almost nothing fails on slope. What fails is space: a kerb spot boxed in at both ends, or a shared lot with no clearance behind the wheel.

Permit zones matter here as everywhere on the north side. Citywide the Parking Permit Zones dataset carries 2,055 numbered zones across 10,392 block faces, 9,889 of them active. The roads and the seasons

Rogers Park filed 4,868 street pothole complaints to 311 over 2019 to 2025, and 726 under the separate Alley Pothole Complaint type. Across all 77 community areas the top of that street ranking is the Near West Side at 13,214 and the bottom is Oakland at 479, so Rogers Park sits in the middle.

The seasons differ by surface. Citywide, street complaints peak in March and February through May carries 50.4% of the year. Alley complaints peak in April and stay high through the summer. Sheridan Road, which runs the length of the lakefront here, drew 2,068 street pothole complaints citywide over the seven years, though that is a raw count over a very long street rather than a per-mile rate.

Winter has no tire rule here, only a parking rule

Illinois prohibits studded tires for ordinary drivers all year under 625 ILCS 5/12-401. Chains are allowed when snow or ice calls for them. There is no legal winter-tire window to work to.

What there is instead is the parking ban: 107 miles of arterial street closed to overnight parking from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m., 1 December to 1 April, enforced regardless of snow, plus 500 more miles once two inches lie. A tow starts at $150, with a $60 ticket and $25 a day of storage on top. The city publishes a map of the affected streets.

Questions people ask

• There is never parking on my block. Then the appointment follows the car. Work, a relative's space, a lot you can use for an hour, all fine.
