CMAP's Community Data Snapshot for the City of Chicago, built on the 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey five-year estimates, puts 45.2 percent of the city's 1,160,205 occupied housing units at exactly one vehicle, against 26.6 percent with none. In some parts of the city the one-car share is far higher: 60.4 percent in the Near South Side, 56.4 percent in West Town, 53.1 percent in Logan Square.

A one-car household cannot hand that car over for half a day and get on with a Tuesday. Dropping it at a shop means arranging a second trip to collect it, and 44.7 percent of Chicago commuters drive alone with a mean commute of 33.1 minutes. The car is the plan. That is the whole reason the van comes to the car instead.

What we do when we get there

1. Check the pressure in all four tires against the door placard, not the sidewall number. What the tire pressure placard means explains the difference, and why the figure moulded into the tire is not your target.
2. Take the affected wheel off the car.
3. Demount the tire and inspect the inner liner. This is the step that tells the truth. A puncture that looks like a clean nail hole from outside can have chewed the liner into something no patch will seal.
4. Repair it, or tell you it cannot be repaired.
5. Remount, rebalance that wheel, reset the TPMS where the vehicle supports it at the roadside, and set the pressure to the placard.

A repair is only legitimate if the damage is in the tread area, no wider than a quarter of an inch, and the tire came off the wheel for both a plug and a patch. Those are the US Tire Manufacturers Association rules, and they rule out most of what makes a tire go flat suddenly.

When a flat is not a repair

Three situations turn a repair into a replacement, and you should know them before you book so the price does not surprise you.

The tire was driven on flat. Running on a deflated tire destroys the sidewall from the inside. There is often nothing to see from outside. Distance matters more than time.

The damage is in the sidewall or the shoulder. Not repairable. Not by us, not by anyone following the standard.

The tread is already close to the line. Illinois sets two different figures here. 625 ILCS 5/12-405(d)(5) deems a tire unsafe below 2/32 of an inch of tread groove depth. 625 ILCS 5/12-405(e)(2) separately makes it unlawful to sell, lease or offer a tire below 3/32. So a tire can be worn past the point where anyone may legally sell you its replacement in part-worn form, while still being legal to drive on. We measure and tell you the number. If it went flat with nothing in it

A flat that arrives with no nail, no screw and no impact is a different problem: a leaking valve stem, a corroded bead seat, a damaged wheel, or a slow loss that finally caught up with you overnight. Tire losing air with no nail in it walks through the causes, and all of them still need the tire off the wheel to confirm.

A mobile puncture repair on one tire is $145 with us. That is the price, not an estimate and not a starting figure. It covers the call-out, taking the wheel off, demounting and inspecting the tire from the inside, a plug and patch fitted the way the tire industry requires, remounting, rebalancing, a TPMS reset where the vehicle supports it, and refitting. If the damage turns out not to be repairable, we tell you on the spot and you are not charged for the repair.

Questions people ask

• Can you repair a flat where my car is parked? Yes, where the space is legal, level, paved and has room to work around one corner of the car. Alley pads, driveways and workplace lots all usually qualify. Tell us which you have when you book.
• I drove a few blocks on it. Does that matter? Often yes. Driving on a deflated tire damages the sidewall internally, and that damage is not repairable and not visible from outside. We will tell you at the inspection rather than patching something that should not be patched.
• Do I pay if the tire turns out to be unrepairable? You pay for the inspection, because finding out means coming to the car, removing the wheel and taking the tire off the rim. You do not pay for a repair that was not done. You then decide whether to replace.
• Is there a call-out fee on top? No. The visit is inside the price shown online. If we arrive and the space is not safe to work in, that visit is not charged.
• Will you fit the tire I ordered online? No. We supply the tires we fit, which is how one business answers for both the tire and the work, and how we can show you a firm price before you give us a phone number.
• Is this roadside assistance? No. We book a visit to a car parked at a fixed address. A car stopped in traffic needs a tow first.
