ZIP 31404 holds one of the three cheapest fitting rates in the Savannah installer directory. Tire Rack lists seventeen recommended installers for ZIP 31401, and we opened every one and read every rate card on 2026-09-20. The Firestone at 2901 Skidaway Road, inside this ZIP, charges $23.00 a tire to mount and balance a 17-inch 65-series tire. Two other Firestone locations match it exactly. Nothing in the directory is cheaper, and the most expensive of the seventeen — All Pro Tire Pros over in Bluffton, South Carolina — is $45.00.

That same Firestone is the nearest fixed shop to the Historic District on Tire Rack's own mileage, at 8 miles. Only the mobile entry in the directory is listed closer, and it is listed at 0.00 miles because it comes to you.

The neighbourhood, in the numbers we actually have

30,062 people live in 31404 in 12,476 occupied units, split almost evenly at 50.2% owner-occupied and 49.8% rented. 67.7% of the housing is one-unit detached, well above the 55.9% the same release gives for the City of Savannah. The median unit falls in the 1950s build band and 11.3% of units predate 1940.

7.7% of households keep no vehicle, against 10.5% citywide. 68.5% drive alone, 12.6% carpool, 2.7% walk or cycle, 13.2% work at home, and the mean commute is 21.3 minutes. This is post-war single-family Savannah east of the core, running out toward Bonaventure and the Wilmington River, with Savannah State University and the Skidaway Road corridor inside it.

What the detached share is not: a driveway count. The American Community Survey has no garage or off-street-parking variable and neither the City nor SAGIS publishes one, so nobody can tell you what percentage of Eastside homes have off-street space. This is the job Tire Rack prices, and it is worth saying plainly that it is not the job we sell — we supply the tires we fit. We are showing it because it is the only fully itemised, publicly posted comparison this metro offers.

GoMobile Tires (mobile, Garden City / Port Wentworth address): $292.00. That is not our arithmetic. It is Tire Rack's own displayed installation total for that exact job on a 2020 Toyota RAV4 AWD LE, and its four component lines add to it: Size 60 and Higher Tires (qty 4) $120.00, TPMS Rebuild Kit (qty 4) $40.00, Disposal Fee (qty 4) $32.00, Mobile Service Fee (per visit) $100.00. The page carries the note "Sales tax not included".

Firestone Complete Auto Care, 2901 Skidaway Rd (fixed shop, this ZIP): $145.20. DERIVED, and every input is a line on that installer's published card: mount and balance 4 × $23.00 = $92.00; TPMS rebuild kit 4 × $5.00 = $20.00; disposal 4 × $5.00 = $20.00; subtotal $132.00; shop fee at 10% of install cost = $13.20; total $145.20.

The difference is $146.80 (DERIVED: $292.00 − $145.20). $100.00 of it is the stated per-visit mobile service fee. The remaining $46.80 is the gap between the per-tire rates, the TPMS and disposal lines, and the shop fee.

One honest wrinkle. Firestone's card says only "Shop Fee (% of Install Cost) 10%" and does not define whether disposal counts as install cost. If it does not, the Firestone total is $143.20 (DERIVED: ($92.00 + $20.00) × 1.10 = $123.20, plus $20.00 disposal) and the difference is $148.80. Publish the range, not a single tidy figure: $146.80 to $148.80, depending on a definition neither card resolves.

Why there is no out-the-door number on this page

Chatham County's combined sales tax rate is 7% on the Georgia Department of Revenue's rate chart in force on 2026-09-20, of which the state share is 4%. Neighbouring Effingham is 8% and Bryan is 9%.

We are not going to multiply that by the figures above and call it an out-the-door price. Whether separately stated repair labour is taxable in Georgia turns on Rule 560-12-2-.88, and the Secretary of State's rules server refused both a browser and a direct fetch on 2026-09-20. A total assembled from one thing we read and one thing we assumed is not a sourced total. You get the component lines and the rate; the addition is yours.

While we are on invoice lines: Georgia does charge $1 on every new tire sold, but since 1 July 2023 that fee is collected from distributors rather than retailers, under the 2023 amendment to O.C.G.A. 12-8-40.1(h). So if a shop anywhere in this metro shows you a $5 or $8 "disposal" or "recycling" line, that is a commercial charge the business sets. It is not the state tire fee being passed through.

What the directory says about who can actually come to you

Of the seventeen installers in the 31401 directory, exactly one is mobile. Tire Rack's own vans are not among the seventeen — the national page advertises "On-site tire installation prices start at just $40 a tire", and that service is simply not purchasable at this ZIP. Zohr, the one national mobile operator publishing a complete rate card, lists three metros across Kansas, Missouri and Texas and has no Georgia presence at all.

That is the supply picture on the Eastside: plenty of fixed shops, one priced mobile operator, and a long list of local mobile operators who publish no price for anything.

A mobile puncture repair is $145 for the first tire and $50 for each additional tire in the same visit, with no separate call-out fee — the line that costs $100.00 on the one published mobile rate card in this metro does not exist on ours. Wheel off, tire demounted and inspected from the inside, plug and patch fitted to the industry method, remount, rebalance, TPMS reset where the car supports it, refit. Repair is subject to inspection on site; if it is not repairable you are not charged for the repair.
