Run-flat tire repair in Los Angeles
A run-flat hides the damage that decides whether it can be repaired. We inspect off the wheel in Los Angeles, where 11.9% of households have no car at all to fall back on.

Start with the tire
No account needed.
A run-flat is built to be driven on after it loses pressure. That is the point of it, and it is also why a run-flat is so often unrepairable by the time anybody looks at it. The feature that gets you home is the feature that destroys the evidence.
We come to where the car is parked, take the wheel off, get the tire off the rim and inspect the inner liner. On a run-flat that inspection is not a formality. It is the only thing that can answer the question at all.
Why a look at the kerb tells you nothing
A conventional tire announces that it has been run flat. The sidewall creases, the bead chews up, and you can see it from three feet away. A run-flat holds its shape on a reinforced sidewall, so it can be driven for miles at low or no pressure and still look entirely normal parked.
What finishes a run-flat is what happened inside it while it was being driven deflated, and none of that shows until the tire comes off the wheel.
The repair standard then applies exactly as it does to any other tire, and it is unforgiving. The US Tire Manufacturers Association requires damage confined to the tread area, no wider than a quarter of an inch, the tire demounted for an internal inspection, and a plug and a patch fitted together. On a run-flat, the internal inspection is also deciding whether the casing was cooked before you called. Plug against patch covers the method, EVs and run-flat tires covers where these tires turn up.
The only warning is a light, and in this city it is easy to dismiss
The tire does not look flat, so the TPMS is the whole warning system. Treat one tire reading low against its neighbours as a leak rather than as weather, check cold before the car has moved, and check against the door placard rather than the number moulded into the sidewall.
California puts a duty behind that. 17 CCR 95550 requires an automotive service provider to "check and inflate each vehicle's tires to the recommended tire pressure rating ... at the time of performing any automotive maintenance or repair service", to record the measured pressures on the invoice, and to use a gauge with a permissible error no greater than 2 psi. The regulation defines an under-inflated tire as one "that is one pound per square inch (psi) or more below the recommended tire pressure rating", and it defines that rating as the door-placard figure. One psi is a tighter threshold than most drivers carry in their heads. What the tire pressure placard means has the rest.
The spare you probably do not have
Cars sold on run-flats usually carry no spare at all, and often no jack. That is the trade: the tire is the spare. Does my car have a spare tire? is the five-minute check, and the answer surprises people.
It matters more here than in a city with a rail alternative. The American Community Survey 2020-2024 five-year estimates put 11.9 percent of the City of Los Angeles's 1,439,097 occupied housing units at no vehicle at all and 40.0 percent at exactly one, against 6.1 percent of workers using public transport and 59.8 percent driving alone. A run-flat that has been driven down and then written off leaves a large share of Los Angeles households with nothing to drive and no easy way to the shop.
That is also why we will not swap you out of the system by default. We accept run-flats where the size is available locally, and we will not replace run-flats with standard tires unless you confirm you understand the vehicle may have no spare.
What Los Angeles fitters charge for run-flat work, in their own words
This part is unusually clean, because all three mobile installers in Tire Rack's Los Angeles directory publish an itemised rate card and all three list the same line. Read live on 2026-09-20:
- Tire Rack Mobile Installation — "Run-Flat Tire Services Free". Mounting and balancing $60.00 a tire at every sidewall aspect-ratio band, 0-35 through 60-plus, with a $120.00 per-visit minimum that acts as a floor rather than an addition.
- ZIPTIRE Mobile — "Run-Flat Tire Services Free". $40.00 a tire at every aspect-ratio band, $55.00 mobile service fee per visit, $125.00 per-visit minimum.
- The Mobile Tire Shop — "Run-Flat Tire Services Free". $35.00 a tire priced by wheel diameter from 15 to 20 inches, $45.00 mobile service fee, and no minimum-charge line at all. Note that this one appears in the Tire Rack directory only for the San Fernando Valley ZIPs we checked, 91331 and 91367, and not for 90015, 90291 or 90731.
Two of the three charge the same mount-and-balance price at every aspect ratio, which means a low-profile 35-series run-flat costs them no more to fit than a 60-series. That is worth knowing before anybody quotes you a "low profile surcharge". What tire repair costs in Los Angeles lays out the fitting prices in full, including the identical-job comparison across all three.
None of the three publishes a price for a mobile puncture repair.
Run-flats, EVs and the Los Angeles fleet
Run-flats and battery-electric cars overlap: both tend to arrive on lower-profile, higher-load-index tires, and a lot of EVs ship without a spare for the same reason a run-flat car does.
The California DMV's registration snapshot at 31 December 2025 records 1,754,366 battery-electric light-duty vehicles out of 29,658,134 statewide, 5.9 percent. Across the eighteen Los Angeles ZIP areas in our research the share runs from 14.1 percent in 91403, Sherman Oaks, down to 1.4 percent in 90002, Watts — ranked over those eighteen and nothing wider.
We match the door placard rather than the old tire when the two disagree, because an EV often needs a specific load index or an EV-rated tire. What we will not do is put a number on how much faster a heavier car wears a tire. We have no measurement for that, in California or anywhere else, and a figure without one is a guess with a decimal point.
What we tell you at the visit
One of two things.
It can be repaired. Tread area, within a quarter of an inch, liner clean, casing sound. Plug and patch from the inside, remount, rebalance, TPMS reset where the vehicle supports it at the roadside, pressures set and written on the invoice.
It cannot. Because the damage is in the sidewall or shoulder, because it is too big, because the liner is torn, or because the casing shows it was driven deflated. In that case we say so, charge for the inspection and not for a repair that did not happen, and quote you a replacement you can have fitted on the same visit. We supply the tires we fit; we do not mount tires bought elsewhere and we do not sell used tires.
We also measure tread beside the wear bar rather than on it, because CVC 27465(c) excludes tie bars, humps and fillets from a tread measurement, and read the date codes. The California tread law and tire age cover what those numbers mean here.
Our price: $145
A mobile puncture repair is $145 for the first tire and $50 for each additional tire in the same visit, with no separate call-out fee. Repair is subject to on-site inspection, and on a run-flat that inspection decides more than usual.
We need level, paved, legal ground with room at one corner of the car, and in Los Angeles the street-sweeping sign usually decides which hour works: street sweeping and mobile tire service. More Los Angeles pages: mobile tire repair, flat tire repair, a slow leak, who is open now, and our Los Angeles service area.
Questions people ask
- Can a run-flat be repaired at all? Sometimes. The same standard applies as to any tire, and the deciding factor is usually whether it was driven while deflated. That can only be established with the tire off the wheel.
- How far can I drive on a run-flat that has lost pressure? Follow the vehicle maker's limit, which is normally a low speed for a short distance. Every mile past that reduces the chance of a repair and raises the chance of a replacement.
- Can I replace run-flats with ordinary tires? We will, if you confirm you understand the vehicle may have no spare and no jack. Many run-flat cars carry neither. EVs and run-flat tires covers the trade-offs.
- Do you charge extra for run-flat work? No, and neither do the three mobile installers in Tire Rack's Los Angeles directory: all three list "Run-Flat Tire Services Free" on their published rate cards, read 2026-09-20.
- Does a low-profile tire cost more to fit? Not at two of those three, which publish the same mount-and-balance price at every sidewall aspect ratio. The third prices by wheel diameter at a flat rate from 15 to 20 inches.
- My EV is heavy. Do I need new tires sooner? Match the door placard rather than the old tire, and check more often. We are not going to give you a percentage, because no measurement we could find supports one.
