Mobile tire service in South Side Slopes, Pittsburgh

In the South Side Slopes, about 70 sets of public staircases are legally classified as streets. They carry street names, they appear on city maps, and no vehicle can use them. Pittsburgh has close to 800 sets of city-owned public steps in total, roughly 460 of them built on structures according to the city's own City Steps plan, and about 70 of them are here.

That is not trivia. It means a mapping application can route a van to a South Side Slopes address that a van cannot physically reach, and the first anyone finds out is when the driver calls you from the bottom of a flight of stairs.

The Slopes runs from 791 feet to 1,174 feet above sea level across roughly 0.716 square miles. The housing was built for J&L Steel workers directly into the hillside: structures one room wide, two rooms deep and up to four stories high, with minimal spacing between them, mostly balloon-frame. Nothing about that pattern leaves room for a driveway, and the streets that do take vehicles are frequently too steep or too narrow to jack a car on safely.

It is also a neighbourhood that drives. 64.5% of working residents commute by car, well above the 54.4% city figure, and only 4.4% walk to work, which on a hillside with 70 staircase streets is less surprising than it looks. 4,122 people live here and 47.2% own their homes.

What this means in practice when you book

Tell us the street and what the car is standing on. We need legal, level, paved ground with room to work at one corner of the car. On the Slopes the honest breakdown is roughly this:

• A flat pad, a level side street or a garage forecourt: fine.
• A street with a noticeable grade where the car sits nose-down: usually not, because the car has to be lifted and held.
• An address reached only by steps: not at all, by us or by anyone with a vehicle.

Where your own address does not work, the answer is normally to meet the car somewhere that does. The Flats are immediately below and are genuinely flat. Your workplace car park usually is too. We would rather move the appointment than send a van that has to turn round.

Road damage here

The Slopes filed 1,233 pothole reports to the city's 311 service between 2015 and 2022, among the lowest counts of the Pittsburgh neighbourhoods we studied. That is not the same as good roads. It is a small population on short streets.

If a tire is losing air with nothing visible in the tread, the usual culprits are the valve stem, the bead seal or a corroded rim rather than a puncture. Tire losing air with no nail works through them. If the car is at home and has not moved since it went flat, leave it there, which is the single most useful thing you can do. We supply the tires we fit, so tires bought elsewhere are out. No alignment, no rotation alone, no balancing alone, no brakes, no emergency roadside. And we will not attempt a lift on ground that is not level. That is not caution for its own sake, it is the difference between a tire change and a car in someone's front room.

It covers the call-out, taking the wheel off, demounting and inspecting the tire from the inside, a plug and patch fitted the way the tire industry requires, remounting, rebalancing, a TPMS reset where the vehicle supports it, and refitting. If the damage turns out not to be repairable, we tell you on the spot and you are not charged for the repair.

Questions people ask

• My street is one of the step streets. Can you get to me? No. Those are legally streets and physically staircases. The car has to be somewhere a vehicle can park.
• My street is drivable but steep. What then? Depends on how steep and whether there is a level stretch. Tell us the block and we will check before anyone is dispatched.
• Can I meet you in the Flats instead? Yes, and that is often the simplest fix. Any legal level paved space with room around the car will do.
• Does the hill cost extra? No. The price online is the price. If the site will not work we say so before you pay.
