Give us the lot and the space number and we come to the car while you stay at your desk. You get the price and the window online first, so there is no phone call to take in a meeting and no estimate visit before the real one. The car is fixed by the time you walk out.

This is the case mobile tire service is actually best at, because your car sits still for eight hours in a paved, level, legal space. That is exactly what the work needs.

The Pittsburgh version of this problem

Where you work decides how bad a workday flat is. The city's commuting split is unusually wide. Across Pittsburgh 54.4 percent of workers drive, but in Central Oakland only 23.7 percent do and 51.0 percent walk, while Mount Washington is at 68.9 percent, South Side Slopes 64.5 percent and Beechview 73.5 percent.

So the person most likely to be stuck with a flat at work is the one who drove in from the hills or the South Hills to a job in Oakland, the Strip or downtown, and whose car is now three neighbourhoods and a tunnel away from home. The Strip District is the clearest case: only 1,717 residents live there, 38.3 percent of them work from home, and the daytime population is offices, so nearly every car in the Strip on a Tuesday belongs to somebody who drove in. Oakland is the other, with the universities and UPMC Presbyterian and Magee-Womens running shifts that do not end when a tire shop closes.

Driving home on it is the expensive option. If the way back is the Parkway East, you are in a queue for a tunnel that carries about 106,000 vehicles a day, on a highway that drops from four lanes to two to get through it, on a tire that is being destroyed by the mile.

What to arrange before you book

1. Permission. Some employers and most managed garages do not allow vehicle work on the property. One email to facilities settles it and takes a minute.
2. Where the car is. Level, paved, legal, with room to work around one corner. An open surface lot is ideal. A structured garage can work if the deck is level and the clearance is normal.
3. Keys. Tell us whether you will be at the car or whether the key needs to be left with a front desk. Either works.
4. What happened. Whether it went down in the lot or whether you drove in on it. A tire driven on while flat is usually a replacement rather than a repair, and we would rather price that honestly up front.

What we do in the lot

The wheel comes off, the tire comes off the wheel, and the inner liner gets inspected. The US Tire Manufacturers Association standard allows a repair only in the tread area, only up to a quarter of an inch, only with the tire demounted, and only as a plug and patch together. If it passes, we repair it, rebalance the wheel, reset the TPMS where the vehicle supports it and set the pressure to the door placard. If it fails, we say so and you decide.

We do not fit tires bought elsewhere, and we do not do alignment, rotation alone, balancing alone, brakes or roadside call-outs. Repair or replace covers where the line falls.

Two local scheduling traps

Game days on the North Shore. When the Steelers and the Pirates both play, ramps and inbound traffic patterns around both stadiums close until 6 p.m., and several lots including Lot 4, Lot 5, Lot 6, the Blue 10 Garage and the West General Robinson Red 5 Garage cannot be reached until 6 p.m. even with a pre-sold pass. If you park there, book around the schedule.

Shift changes and lot sweeps. If your lot is cleared or restriped on a fixed day, or your space reverts to somebody else at 5 p.m., tell us. We would rather move the window than arrive to a car that has been moved.

A mobile puncture repair on one tire is $145 with us. That is the price, not an estimate and not a starting figure. It covers the call-out, taking the wheel off, demounting and inspecting the tire from the inside, a plug and patch fitted the way the tire industry requires, remounting, rebalancing, a TPMS reset where the vehicle supports it, and refitting. If the damage turns out not to be repairable, we tell you on the spot and you are not charged for the repair.

Questions people ask

• Do I have to be at the car? No. Leave the key at reception or with a colleague and tell us where the car is parked. We set the pressure to the door placard and send you the detail.
• Will my employer allow it? Ask facilities before you book. Many surface lots are fine; managed parking garages often prohibit vehicle work outright, and that is their call, not ours.
• Can you work inside a parking garage? Usually yes, if the property allows it, the deck is level and the clearance is normal. Tell us it is a garage when you book so we can check.
• I drove to work on a soft tire. Does that change anything? It can. Running a tire flat or badly under-inflated tears the inner liner and folds the sidewall against the rim, which makes it a replacement rather than a repair.
• How long does it take? A single puncture repair is a short job, but the honest answer depends on the vehicle and the wheel. You see the booked window before you pay, not a promise to call you back.
• What if the tire is too worn to repair? Pennsylvania rejects a car at inspection when two adjacent tread grooves are below 2/32 inch. If your tire is close to that, we will tell you that repairing it is money wasted and show you the replacement price instead.
