What counts as a repairable tire

The rules are not ours. They come from the US Tire Manufacturers Association, and any shop worth using follows them.

• The damage has to be in the tread area, the part that touches the road. Nothing in the sidewall or the shoulder can be repaired, by us or by anyone.
• The hole has to be no larger than a quarter of an inch.
• The tire has to come off the wheel, so the inner liner can be inspected. A tire can look fine outside and be shredded inside.
• The repair is a plug and a patch together. A plug jammed in from outside without removing the tire is not a repair. It is a way of selling you a tire twice.

Pennsylvania has its own rules on top

Repairability is a national standard. Roadworthiness in Pennsylvania is not. Under 67 Pa. Code 175.80(e)(1), your car is rejected at the annual safety inspection if any two adjacent grooves are down to less than 2/32 inch of tread, if any ply or cord is exposed, if there is a bump, bulge or separation, or if the tire has been repaired with a blow-out patch or a boot. So a tire can be technically repairable and still be a bad thing to spend money on, because it will fail inspection in three months anyway. We tell you which case you are in before we do the work, not after. Repair or replace sets out where the line falls.

Getting a van to your door here is the real constraint

Pittsburgh is not a flat grid, and a mobile tire service that pretends otherwise wastes your morning. The city owns close to 800 sets of public steps, and its own City Steps plan counts roughly 460 of them built on structures. In the South Side Slopes alone, about 70 sets of public staircases are legally classified as streets. They appear on maps as streets. A van cannot drive up them.

So give us the address where the car actually is, and tell us what the space looks like. We need level, legal, paved ground with room to work around one corner of the car. A driveway in Brookline is ideal. A permit space on a Slopes street at a steep grade is not, and it is better to know that before the van leaves. Why you cannot find a price anywhere else in this city

We checked. A manual pass over Google Maps listings for mobile tire work in Pittsburgh on 2026-09-20 turned up 17 local businesses. Most of them are truck and trailer roadside outfits or general mobile mechanics rather than consumer tire fitters, and most publish no hours, let alone a price.

The nearest thing to an exception is GoMobile Tires, which lists a flat repair at $175. On 2026-09-20 neither their Pittsburgh location page nor their pricing page carried a replacement number. A figure of $259 for four tires fitted appears only at step three of their booking estimator, before the form asks for your contact details, so treat that one as an estimator output, not a published price. Their Pittsburgh branch is also at 1010 Clearsprings Drive, Cranberry Township, in Butler County, about 20 miles north of downtown.

If the damage turns out not to be repairable, we tell you on the spot and you are not charged for the repair.

Questions people ask

• Can you repair a tire at my house in Pittsburgh? Yes, where there is legal, level, paved space with room to work around the car. Most driveways in Brookline, Mount Washington and Mt. Lebanon qualify. Tight permit-parking streets in the South Side Flats and Bloomfield often do not, so tell us the situation when you book.
• Is a plug on its own a real repair? No. The US Tire Manufacturers Association standard requires the tire to come off the wheel for internal inspection and to get both a plug and a patch. Anyone doing it from the outside in five minutes is not repairing your tire.
