Mobile tire service in Bloomfield, Pittsburgh

Bloomfield sent 2,800 pothole reports to the City of Pittsburgh's 311 service between 2015 and 2022. It is third in the city archive behind Brookline and Squirrel Hill South, and it did it from 8,638 residents packed into 0.702 square miles. Brookline needed 2.08 square miles and about 13,200 people to file 3,935. Per square mile of neighbourhood, that makes Bloomfield's road surface the most complained-about of any neighbourhood in our Pittsburgh research.

Rowhouses, a plateau and four flights of steps

Bloomfield sits on the plateau above the Allegheny, three miles from downtown, and its housing is provincial rowhouses with Victorian brick toward the Friendship end. Four public stairway flights, Lorigan, Juniper and Neville among them, drop from the plateau to the streets below. Density is about 12,300 people per square mile, down from 20,708 residents in 1940, so the street layout was set when far more people lived here and far fewer of them owned cars.

Only 32.1% of occupied units are owner-occupied. 67.9% rent. Rowhouses on a plateau grid with two thirds of households renting adds up to one thing for us: the work happens at the kerb, and that is fine.

The kerb, and what competes for it

46.4% of working residents drive, 15.9% take transit, 12.7% walk and 21.5% work from home. West Penn Hospital sits on the edge of the neighbourhood and Liberty Avenue is the business corridor, so residential kerb space competes with hospital traffic and with a commercial street all day.

What we need is a legal, level, paved space with room to work at one corner of the car. The city's residential permit programme costs $40 per vehicle a year with a $10 annual visitor pass per address, and street cleaning runs on days posted by neighbourhood. A permit space outside your house works. A metered space on Liberty during trading hours is a worse idea. If your car usually lives on a side street off Liberty, book the slot for where the car will actually be.

Why the pothole number matters to your tires

A pothole does not usually puncture a tire. It pinches the sidewall between the road edge and the rim, which produces a cut or a bulge, or it deforms the rim flange, which produces a slow leak at the bead days later. Sidewall cuts and bulges cannot be repaired by anyone, and under 67 Pa. Code 175.80 a bump, bulge or separation is an automatic rejection at the Pennsylvania annual safety inspection, along with any exposed ply or cord.

A bead leak, by contrast, often needs no new tire at all. The two look identical from the outside, which is why we take the wheel off and inspect the tire from the inside before saying which one you have. We supply the tires we fit, so tires bought elsewhere are out. No alignment, no rotation on its own, no balancing on its own, no brakes, no emergency roadside. If the only available space is a metered commercial kerb or a spot the van cannot legally occupy, we will say so before you pay.

It covers the call-out, taking the wheel off, demounting and inspecting the tire from the inside, a plug and patch fitted the way the tire industry requires, remounting, rebalancing, a TPMS reset where the vehicle supports it, and refitting. If the damage turns out not to be repairable, we tell you on the spot and you are not charged for the repair.

Questions people ask

• I rent and have no driveway. Does that rule me out? No. Two thirds of Bloomfield rents. A legal, level kerbside space with room around the car is all we need.
• Can you work on Liberty Avenue? Rarely a good idea during trading hours. A side street or your workplace is easier and cheaper for you.
• I hit a pothole and now the wheel leaks slowly. Often the rim rather than the tire. That is a cheaper outcome and we will tell you if it is what you have.
• Will a repaired tire pass Pennsylvania inspection? A correct tread-area plug and patch is not a rejection. A boot, a blow-out patch, a bulge or exposed cord is.
• What about the hospital shift parking on my street? Book the slot for a time the car is where you say it is. We plan around the space, not the address.
• How fast can you come? It depends on the day. The price and the available windows both appear online before anyone is dispatched.
