A street grid laid on a hillside

Beechview was founded in 1905 around the new light rail. Its streets follow a grid pattern despite the hills, which produces some extremely steep roads. The extreme case is a landmark. Canton Avenue is 630 feet long and is claimed to carry a 37% grade over a 21-foot stretch, which makes it the steepest officially recorded public street in the United States. The record is disputed: Bradford Street in San Francisco has a 39% grade over about 30 feet, and Waipio Valley Road in Hawaii has sections near 45%.

That is what a grid over a hillside does. The gradient is not distributed evenly across the neighbourhood, it is concentrated on whichever streets happen to run across the slope instead of along it. So in Beechview the question is never whether we serve the neighbourhood. It is what your block looks like.

For a tire fit we need level, paved, legal ground with room to work at one corner of the car and jack it safely. Plenty of Beechview meets that easily. Pittsburgh averages 114 days a year with a low at or below 32 F but only 32 days that never rise above freezing, so water gets into the road, expands, and melts again, over and over, through most of the winter. Citywide, February to May carries 53% of the year's pothole complaints.

On steep streets that matters more than the raw count suggests. Water runs downhill and collects where the grade breaks, and a pothole taken at the bottom of a descent is taken with the car's weight loaded onto the front tires. That is the impact that bends a rim or separates a belt. A bulge in the sidewall afterwards is a replacement, never a repair, whoever you ask.

Fitting at the house instead of driving there

Beechview has 7,596 residents across 1.46 square miles, down from a peak of 14,360 in 1970, so the density is moderate by city standards at about 5,200 people per square mile.

If a tire is down and the car has not moved, leave it. A flat in the driveway explains why: a tire that deflated while parked is normally repairable, and driving it to a shop on the flat is what ends that. We take the wheel off and inspect the tire from the inside before deciding, which is the only way the decision is honest.

• My street is steep. Can you still come? Usually, but the car has to end up on level ground. Tell us the block when you book and we will check before anyone is dispatched.
• Can you work at the kerb rather than in the driveway? Yes, where the space is legal, level, paved and has room around the car.
