When to switch to winter tires, and can it be done at home?

Once daytime temperatures are consistently at or below about 45°F, a dedicated winter tire's rubber compound stays pliable and grips better than an all-season tire's, whose compound starts to stiffen in that range regardless of tread pattern. That is the temperature line to watch, not the first snowfall. The temperature line, not the calendar

An all-season tire's rubber is formulated to work across a wide range, but it is a compromise, not a specialist. As the compound gets cold, it firms up and loses grip, on dry pavement as well as on ice and snow. Winter tire compounds are built to stay flexible well below freezing, which is the whole reason they exist as a separate category.

The practical guidance from tire manufacturers is to track average temperature, not the calendar: once your area is consistently running near or under 45°F, a winter tire's grip advantage shows up even on dry, cold roads, before any snow falls. The reverse holds in spring: running winter tires once temperatures climb back into the 50s and warmer wears them faster and gives up dry-road grip you would otherwise have, which is why manufacturer guidance treats them as a seasonal tire, not a year-round one. Can the swap be done at home?

Physically, yes. Swapping a set of wheels or tires does not need a shop bay: a technician with a jack, a torque wrench and a place to work at each corner of the car can do it in a driveway or a parking lot the same way a shop does it on a lift, and that is the basis of every mobile tire service, including ours.

• New winter tires, supplied and mounted at your address. This is live. Choose a budget, mid or premium tier, and we bring the tires to the car, mount them, balance them and remove the old set at your home or workplace. This is the same booking flow as any other new-tire installation.
• Seasonal changeover, swapping your existing winter and all-season sets back and forth twice a year. This is what most people mean by "swap to winter tires," and it is paused while we finish that scope (owner decision, 2026-09-22). It is not on the booking form today, and no request for it can be priced. Questions people ask

• Is 45°F an exact cutoff, or a rough guide? A rough guide. Manufacturer materials describe it as the range where the crossover in grip becomes noticeable, not a precise switch that flips at exactly 45.0°F. Watch your area's typical daytime highs through the season rather than a single day's reading.
• Can I just run winter tires year-round instead of tracking the temperature? You can, but expect faster wear and reduced dry-weather grip once temperatures warm up, which is why manufacturers describe winter tires as seasonal equipment rather than an all-year set.
• Do all-weather tires solve this without a swap? They are built as a year-round compromise with more winter capability than a standard all-season, but manufacturers are explicit that they are not a substitute for a dedicated winter tire in sustained snow and ice. • Does a puncture repair work differently on a winter tire? No. Mobile tire repair inspects and repairs a winter tire the same way as any other: off the wheel, inspected from the inside, repaired if the damage qualifies.
