This tool is not our quote; it is a decision check. The honest answer depends mainly on one thing: whether your vehicle is all-wheel or four-wheel drive, and if so, how different the tread depth is between your new tire and the ones staying on the car.

Manufacturers set their own tolerances, and we do not have a lookup for every make and model. Where you know your manufacturer's own spec, use it instead of the general ranges below.

• Drivetrain: front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, or four-wheel drive
• Number of tires that actually need replacing (1, 2, or 3)
• Tread depth of the tires staying on the car, in 32nds of an inch
• Tread depth of the new tire(s), in 32nds of an inch (new tires are commonly 10/32 to 11/32; check your specific tire)
• Your vehicle manufacturer's stated tread-depth or circumference tolerance, if you know it

The logic

treadDifference = newTireTread - remainingTireTread   (in 32nds of an inch)

If drivetrain is FWD or RWD (two-wheel drive):
  No drivetrain circumference rule applies.
  Recommendation: match tread depth within each axle pair as closely as you can
  for even handling; replacing fewer than four is mechanically fine.

If drivetrain is AWD or 4WD:
  If a manufacturer-specific tolerance is known, use it as the threshold.
  Otherwise, apply the general fallback range found in public guidance:
    treadDifference <= 2/32   -> likely fine, but confirm in your owner's manual
    2/32 < treadDifference <= 4/32  -> borderline; many manufacturers set limits
                                        in this band, so check your manual or
                                        replace all four to be safe
    treadDifference > 4/32 
                              -> replace all four

• Tire Rack says mismatched tires on an AWD or 4WD vehicle "may cause components in the vehicle's driveline to fail", and that vehicle makers set different limits: some want all four tires within 2/32, 3/32 or 4/32 inch of each other in tread depth, and Subaru wants circumference within 1/4 inch. • Why does this only matter for AWD and 4WD? Two driven axles must turn at matched speeds; a tire with different rolling circumference throws that off in a way a single driven axle does not experience the same way.
• What if I do not know my manufacturer's exact tolerance? Use the general range above as a starting point and check your owner's manual or ask your technician to confirm before the visit.
• Can you supply just one or two tires on an AWD car? Sometimes, if the tread difference is small enough; tell us your situation in the request and we will confirm what is safe.
