Highland, the part of northwest Denver people call LoHi, has some of the worst road surface in the city. Its average pavement condition index is 65.4 across 289 scored street segments in Denver DOTI's asset layer, the sixth lowest average of all 78 Denver neighbourhoods. Its worst single segment scores 10, the lowest individual score of the eighteen neighbourhoods we profiled.

The city's pavement index says nothing about when it was surveyed, so read it as a relative picture rather than as this morning's condition. The ranking is still the ranking: the money that rebuilt Highland's housing did not rebuild Highland's asphalt.

We supply tires and fit them where the car is parked, here and across Denver. Price up front, no call-out fee.

A neighbourhood where the car sits still

44.9% of Highland residents work at home, the third highest share of all 78 Denver neighbourhoods. 39.2% drive alone. 9.1% of households have no car, 48.0% have exactly one, 32.5% have two and 10.5% have three or more.

A car that sits five days a week is not a car without tire problems. It is a car whose slow leak nobody notices until the morning it has to go somewhere. A Denver day swings about 28 Fahrenheit between the overnight low and the afternoon high in an average month, which moves cold pressure by roughly 2.8 psi at the passenger-car end of the range USTMA publishes, one to two psi for every ten degrees. If you only drive at weekends, check it on a Saturday morning before you set off.

Getting to the car

The housing here is split. 26.9% of units are single family detached and another 12.0% are single family attached, most of that the newer townhouse stock with tuck-under garages that replaced the old Highland cottages. 42.4% sit in buildings of twenty or more.

No residential permit area covers Highland. Kerb parking is free and unrestricted throughout, which surprises people who have run a car in a dense neighbourhood in an older city. Finding a legal space to work beside is rarely the problem in this half of Denver.

The tuck-under garage is the awkward case. It is often exactly wide enough for the car and nothing else, with a sloped apron in front of it. If that is your setup, park on the street for the slot.

What broken pavement does to a tire

Denver crosses freezing in both directions on roughly 136 days a year, derived from NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals at Denver Central Park: 156.5 days with a low at or below 32 Fahrenheit, but only 21.0 days that never climb above it. That is about 1.7 times Chicago's equivalent count. It freezes at night and thaws by lunchtime all winter, which is what opens up a street.

A rim strike is not usually a repairable event. C.R.S. 42-4-228 lists the conditions that make a tire unsafe in Colorado, and they include any bump, bulge or knot affecting the tire structure, and a break which exposes a tire body cord. We do not patch a sidewall bulge or a break through to the cord, on this street or any other.

There is no per-neighbourhood pothole count for Denver, and anyone quoting you one is inventing it. The neighbourhood field in the city's 311 data is null on every row and the yearly archives stop at 2023. Council district 1, which covers Highland, West Highland, Berkeley and Sunnyside, filed 2,191 street pothole requests over 2019 to 2023.

Where we are not the right answer

We supply the tires we fit, so a set bought online elsewhere is out. No alignment, no rotation alone, no balancing alone, no brakes, no emergency roadside. If the only place to work is a garage bay with no clearance beside the car, we will ask you to move to the kerb.

What a repair costs

A mobile puncture repair on the first tire is $145, fixed, with the visit included. Wheel off, tire demounted and inspected from the inside, a plug and patch to the industry method, remount, rebalance, TPMS reset where the car supports it, refit. If it cannot be repaired safely we say so there and then, at no repair charge.

Questions people ask

  • Is it worth patching a tire that hit a hole on 32nd? Only after we take it off and look inside. Impact damage often shows on the inner liner and nowhere else.
  • My car barely moves. Do tires still age? Yes. Rubber degrades with time and exposure regardless of miles, and pressure drifts either way.
  • How do I know what to buy? Start with the size on the sidewall: find your tire size.
  • Street or garage? Whichever has level, paved ground and clear room at one corner. Tell us which at booking.
  • One tire or the pair? Repair or replace covers when a single tire is fine and when it is not.
  • Slow leak, no nail in sight. Common, and the causes are short: a tire losing air with no nail.
