Can you mix tire brands?

Do not choose a replacement just because another brand has the same size. The complete tire set must meet your vehicle manufacturer's requirements. Brand, model, construction, seasonal type, ratings, and wear all belong in the decision. Ask a qualified tire professional to approve the proposed combination before buying.

Michelin's mixing guidance, reviewed September 19, 2026, recommends consistent tire specifications and following the vehicle manual. It also distinguishes manufacturer-approved front/rear size differences from accidental mismatches.

What are you actually changing?

A different brand is only one possible mismatch. Two tires from the same brand can be different products. Two tires with the same nominal size can also differ in other important specifications.

Use this handoff sheet when the original tire is unavailable. Enter the exact information rather than "similar" or "equivalent."

Do matching brands matter more than matching specifications?

Do not use either as the sole test. A matching logo does not prove that the model, ratings, or condition match. A matching size string does not prove that the whole set is suitable.

For example, "two Brand A tires and two Brand B tires" is not a complete description. A useful proposal names the models, their positions, and the specifications the installer checked. Ask for that explanation on the work order.

What changes for AWD or winter tires?

Michelin warns that AWD and 4WD systems can need matching tire diameters. It also warns against putting winter tires on only one axle because the grip balance changes. Follow the vehicle-specific requirements; there is no universal tread-difference allowance that this page can safely apply to every car.

What if the original tire has been discontinued?

Ask for two written options: the closest approved replacement arrangement and a matching-set alternative. Have the installer explain what makes each option suitable. A low stock count is not evidence of compatibility.

Do not authorize an unlisted substitute on the assumption that all products with the same diameter are interchangeable.

A short message to send

"I need to replace [quantity] tires on [year, make, model, trim, drivetrain]. The tires staying on the car are [model and size], at [measured tread depths]. Can you confirm whether [proposed model] meets the vehicle's requirements in this arrangement? Please identify any required axle or full-set replacement."

Attach the worksheet and tire-size photos. Ask for approval before an installer orders tires or travels to the vehicle.
