Shadyside has the highest transit share of the neighbourhoods we studied, 20.4%, with 34.9% driving, 13.3% walking and 27.9% working from home. It is a professional and student mix: 19.8% of residents are aged 18 to 24, 27.3% of enrolled residents are in college or graduate school, and only 7.7% are under 18.

That mix produces a specific pattern. A lot of Shadyside cars are parked far more than they are driven, sometimes for weeks, near Walnut Street or off Ellsworth or South Highland. Questions people ask

• I have no driveway and no garage. Is that a problem? No. Most of Shadyside is in the same position. A legal, level kerbside space with room around the car is enough.
• Can you work in my building's parking garage? Usually not. Low ceilings, no room to work and building rules are the normal blockers, so check with management first.
• What about my street cleaning day? Avoid it. Pick a slot on another day or move the car, otherwise you are paying the city as well as us.
