A roadside spare or a scheduled replacement

These are two different problems with two different answers, and the reason to separate them is that a spare is a way of moving the car, not a way of fixing it.

What we do not do

If you are stopped on a live road or a shoulder right now, call roadside assistance, your insurer's roadside line, or 911 if you are in danger. We do not dispatch roadside spare changes and we are not a same-minute service. We book visits to cars standing at a fixed address.

A car stopped in a traffic lane needs a tow first. Nothing below applies until the car is parked somewhere safe.

What a spare actually is

A temporary spare is not a small version of a normal tire. It is a different object built to a different brief: get the car somewhere the real tire can be dealt with, at the lowest weight and volume the manufacturer could manage.

• Its limits are printed on it. Speed and distance are on the spare's own sidewall or wheel label and in the owner's manual. Around 50 mph and a short distance is common and it varies by car, so read yours rather than trusting a general number. How far you can drive on a donut spare.
• Its pressure is much higher than a road tire, often around 60 psi. A Ford Explorer's mini-spare is stored at 60 psi. What the tire pressure placard means.
• Some manufacturers require it on a non-driven axle, which means moving a full-size wheel from the back to the front. The manual decides, not habit.
• Many recent cars do not have one at all, only a sealant kit, and sealant will not fix anything larger than a pinhole. Does my car have a spare tire and a flat tire with no spare.

In New York, the donut fails the inspection

This is the specific, checkable reason not to leave a spare on the car, and most drivers do not know it.

15 NYCRR 79.21(c) is the tire item on New York's annual inspection. Rejection criterion 5, verbatim from the DMV's own publication of Part 79:

Tire is marked "Not for Highway Use", "for farm use only", "for racing use only", "for temporary use only", or other markings having like meaning, or the tire size designation is preceded by a "T". (Amended 1/23/08)

Two independent triggers in one sentence, and a space-saver spare usually pulls both. Go and look: if the size on the sidewall begins with a T, like T125/70R17, then driving to your annual inspection on it means failing, whatever the other three tires read.

The spare in the boot is not inspected. The same subdivision's procedure column says "Inspect all tires mounted on vehicles (do not inspect spare tire)." So the rule is about position, not possession. The donut in the well does not concern the inspector; the donut on the car is a mounted tire.

Plan the permanent repair or replacement

Roadside help gets the vehicle to a safe place. It does not decide whether the damaged tire is repairable or put a permanent tire back on the car. Once the car is parked, HopTire can inspect an eligible puncture or supply and fit a new tire.

How the two connect

The usual path is both, in order: the spare gets the car off the road today, and a scheduled visit puts a real tire on at the address where the car is parked, so the car never drives on the donut again. Tell us you are on a spare when you book, because it changes how the visit is scheduled and it tells us the wheel is already off.

Questions people ask

• Can you come and put my spare on right now? No. That is roadside dispatch and we do not offer it. Call roadside assistance, and call us once the car is parked.
• How long can I drive on a donut? Read the limit printed on that spare and the figure in your manual. Around 50 mph and a short distance is common, and it varies by vehicle.
• Will a donut fail a New York inspection? Yes, if it is on the car. 15 NYCRR 79.21(c) criterion 5 rejects a tire whose size designation is preceded by a "T", and separately one marked "for temporary use only".
• What about the spare in my boot? Not inspected. The procedure says in terms "Inspect all tires mounted on vehicles (do not inspect spare tire)."
• What if the car has no spare at all? Increasingly common. Say so when you book: it changes what is possible before we arrive, and it means the car should not be moved. A flat tire with no spare.
