44.2% of the 23,227 households in ZIP 91331 keep three or more vehicles — 4,727 with three and 5,531 with four or more (DERIVED: 4,727 plus 5,531, over 23,227 households). Citywide, 16.3% of the City of Los Angeles's 1,439,097 households keep three or more.

That is the highest share of the eighteen Los Angeles ZIP codes in our research, and it is the fact that shapes every visit here. This is not a neighbourhood where one car has one problem. It is a household fleet, and the job in front of us is usually one car out of three or four standing in the same space.

70,672 registered cars, and most of them are not new

Of the 70,672 light-duty vehicles registered in 91331 at 31 December 2025, 78.3% are model year 2020 or older, 55.0% are model year 2015 or older and 38.9% sit in the DMV's oldest bucket, before 2012. California as a whole is 72.1% of 29,658,134 registered light-duty vehicles at model year 2020 or older, 46.1% at 2015 or older and 29.8% pre-2012.

Battery-electric vehicles are 2.3% of the local fleet — 1,619 of 70,672 — against 5.9% statewide. Across the eighteen ZIP codes in our research the electric share runs from 14.1% in Sherman Oaks down to 1.4% in Watts, and this end of the Valley sits near the bottom of it.

75.0% of the 44,049 working residents drive alone and 12.4% carpool; only 6.8% work from home. Mean travel time to work is 30.8 minutes, derived from an ACS aggregate of 1,265,310 travel minutes over the 41,046 workers who did not work at home.

An old fleet doing real daily mileage in Valley heat is a repair market before it is a replacement market, and mobile puncture repair is in scope subject to on-site inspection.

Two neighbourhoods, two very different streets

The ZIP covers two neighbourhood councils that sit forty ranks apart. In StreetsLA's June 2026 street inventory, Pacoima carries 94.7 centreline miles of which 16.9 are rated Poor, 56.1 Good and 21.7 Fair — 17.8%, rank 54 of the 100 named councils. Arleta carries 60.6 miles with 6.7 Poor, 41.8 Good and 12.1 Fair — 11.0%, rank 93.

Both are under the citywide figure of 1,266.3 Poor miles out of 6,575.0, or 19.3%. The lazy expectation is that the working Valley has the city's worst asphalt; the inventory says the worst is in Atwater Village at 43.0%, Hollywood United at 40.6% and Silver Lake at 38.8%.

There is no freeze here to explain any of it either. The 1991–2020 normal for days with a maximum at or below 32F is 0.0 at every Los Angeles station, Van Nuys Airport averages 0.6 nights a year at or below freezing, and the LAX snowfall normal is 0.0 inches. We report the condition and stop, because the cause is not sourced.

Single-family blocks, and the space the van needs

62.4% of the 23,227 occupied units here are owner-occupied and 68.8% of the 24,025 housing units are one-unit detached, with another 8.5% one-unit attached. 38.3% of the stock was built in the 1950s and 55.6% by 1959.

We use units-in-structure because it is the only measure that exists. The American Community Survey has no garage or off-street-parking variable, the City of Los Angeles publishes no garage count, and the state ADU laws since 2017 have turned very large numbers of Los Angeles garages into dwellings — so even an old count would overstate today's driveways. We will not quote a driveway percentage for Pacoima.

What we need is level, paved, legal ground with clear room to work at one corner of the car. With 44.2% of households at three or more vehicles, the practical constraint is congestion rather than surface: move the other cars before we arrive and a four-tire job gets materially quicker. Only 7.6% of households here keep no vehicle at all.

The Valley has a mobile market the rest of the city does not

Tire Rack's recommended-installer directory for 91331, read on 2026-09-20, listed twenty installers, of which four were mobile: Tire Rack Mobile Installation at $240.00, ZipTire Mobile at $229.00, and The Mobile Tire Shop at $197.00, all for four Michelin CrossClimate2 225/65R17 fitted to a 2020 Toyota RAV4 AWD LE with sales tax excluded, alongside America's Tire at $116.00 as a fixed store.

The $197.00 card is worth understanding because it is not purchasable everywhere. The Mobile Tire Shop appears in Tire Rack's lists for 91331 and for Woodland Hills, and it does not appear in the lists for Downtown, Venice or San Pedro. Mobile supply in Los Angeles is not metro-wide, and the Valley has more of it than the coast does.

Two other published figures, for context rather than for comparison shopping. Tire Rack's own card lists a "Minimum Charge (per visit) $120.00", which is a floor that binds on a one- or two-tire visit and is not added to a four-tire job — four at $60.00 comes to $240.00 with nothing on top. And America's Tire, the California trading name of Discount Tire, lists 84 participating stores across eight states in its mobile programme with none of them in California, while offering free flat repair at its counters. If the car can be driven, that free counter is a real alternative to paying anyone, including us.

The tread rule that is half what you think

California's passenger-car minimum is one thirty-second of an inch "in any two adjacent grooves at any location of the tire", under CVC 27465(b)(1). Most states use two thirty-seconds, which is what the Lincoln-head penny measures, so the penny is the wrong tool here.

Two practical notes. 27465(c) says the measurement "shall not be made where tie bars, humps, or fillets are located", so the gauge goes in the groove beside a wear bar rather than on one. And the limit binds the fitter, not only the driver: under 27465(a) no dealer or holder of a retail seller's permit may sell, offer, expose for sale, or install on an axle a tire below that depth. CVC 27461 separately makes it unlawful to operate a non-commercial vehicle fitted with a recut or regrooved tire. We will not fit either, and that is statute rather than policy.

What we do not do

We supply the tires we fit. Fitting customer-supplied tires was withdrawn on 2026-09-20. No alignment, no rotation on its own, no balancing on its own, no brakes, no emergency roadside.

Our price

A mobile puncture repair is $145 for the first tire and $50 for each additional tire on the same visit, subject to on-site inspection. No call-out fee. Wheel off, tire demounted and inspected from the inside, repair fitted to the industry method, remount, rebalance, TPMS reset where the vehicle supports it, wheel back on. If it cannot be repaired safely we say so on the spot and there is no repair charge.
