Mazda CX-5 tires

The CX-5 runs four original tire sizes and, on the two we can corroborate, two different pressures one psi apart. A one psi step is the kind of thing a busy fitter waves away. It is also what the placard says, and the placard is the only figure that was chosen for your car rather than for a category of car.

The sizes Mazda fitted

The KF generation runs from 2017. Sizes and pressures here are confirmed on the 2023 car.

• P225/65R17 on the 2.5 S.
• P225/55R19 on 2.5 S, 2.5 S Carbon Edition, 2.5 Turbo and 2.5 Turbo Signature. This size covers the most trims.
• 225/60R18 on the 2.5 Turbo Meridian Edition.
• 245/45R20 on 2.5 S and 2.5 Turbo.

Four sizes on one model, and the 2.5 S appears on three of them. That is the part to notice: the trim name does not settle the tire on this car. Wheel diameter moves with the specification while the vehicle underneath stays the same, so the sidewall and the placard are the only reliable answers. See finding your tire size.

Where the CX-5 puts its placard

The driver-side B-pillar, or the edge of the driver's door frame. Mazda's own owner's manual, under Location of the Tire Label, says you will find the tire label containing tire inflation pressure by tire size on the driver's side B-pillar or on the edge of the driver's door frame.

Mazda names both places, which is helpful and slightly annoying. Open the driver's door and check the door frame edge first. If it is bare, look at the upright post beside your shoulder, which is the B-pillar. One of the two will have it. Our tire pressure placard guide covers which makes use which.

How to read it once you find it

1. Cold pressure, front.
2. Cold pressure, rear. Equal to the front on this vehicle.
3. The original tire size, which selects the row that applies to your car.
4. The spare, printed separately and normally at a much higher figure.

Cold means the car has been parked at least three hours, or driven under about a mile. A tire warms as it rolls and its pressure rises with it, so a reading taken after a drive is high.

The verified pressures, and the two gaps

Two independent pressure sources agree exactly on two of the four fitments:

• P225/55R19: 35 psi front and rear.
• P225/65R17: 34 psi front and rear.

The 225/60R18 Meridian Edition and the 245/45R20 were not carried by either pressure source. We have no corroborated figure for them, and we are not going to supply one. On those two cars the label is the authority, and it is on the B-pillar or the door frame edge as above.

Front and rear are equal on the fitments we can confirm, so setting all four the same is correct there. The step between 17-inch and 19-inch looks like a rounding error and is not one.

Replacing fewer than four

All-wheel drive became standard on the CX-5 from the 2022 model year and was optional before that, so the year on your car changes this conversation. No Mazda i-ACTIV tire-matching tolerance was found in our sources, and Tire Rack's per-manufacturer matching table does not cover Mazda, so there is no numeric limit to quote and we will not invent one.

On an older front-drive car, one or two tires is routine, and two new ones go on the rear axle. What changes on a mobile CX-5 fitting

• Direct TPMS, with a sensor in each road wheel, so the job ends with a reset or a relearn.
• Four possible sizes and only two corroborated pressures. On an 18-inch Meridian or a 20-inch car we set strictly to the label.
• The label may be on the pillar rather than the door frame edge, so the door is opened fully and both places are checked.
• Wheels from 17 to 20 inch, none awkward to lift or reach in a driveway or a parking bay.
• On 2022 and later cars, all-wheel drive is standard, which changes a single-tire job into a look at all four.

Questions people ask

• What psi does a CX-5 take? 35 front and rear on the 19-inch fitment and 34 on the 17-inch, both corroborated. The 18-inch and 20-inch have no corroborated figure in our records.
• Where is the label? The driver-side B-pillar or the edge of the driver's door frame. Mazda's manual names both, so check both.
• Why does the label have several numbers on it? Because Mazda prints inflation pressure by tire size, and this car has four OE sizes. Use the row that matches your tire.
• Is my CX-5 all-wheel drive? From the 2022 model year it is standard. Before that it was optional, so check the car rather than the model name.
• Can I replace two tires? On a front-drive car, yes, on the rear axle. On an all-wheel-drive car we look at the other two first.
