Ram 1500 tires

Two different trucks were sold as a Ram 1500 in the same showroom year, and they do not share tire sizes. Get that wrong and the tires that arrive will not fit. The pressure, meanwhile, is on a label Ram puts on the B-pillar or the rear edge of the driver's door, and Ram prints no figure anywhere else.

Which Ram 1500 do you have

The DT body arrived for 2019. The older DS body carried on alongside it as the Ram 1500 Classic through 2024. They look similar from a distance and share a name. They share almost nothing at the wheel.

On the 2023 DT truck:

• 275/65R18 116T on Tradesman, Big Horn, Lone Star and Laramie, 4x2 and 4x4
• 275/55R20 113T on Tradesman, Tradesman HFE, Big Horn, Lone Star, Laramie, Limited and Limited Longhorn. This is the volume fitment.
• 285/45R22 114H XL on Laramie, Limited and Limited Longhorn
• LT275/70R18 load range E 125/122R on the Rebel

On the 2023 DS Classic:

• P265/70R17 113R on Tradesman, with LT265/70R17 load range E 121/118S also listed for Tradesman and Warlock
• P275/60R20 114S on Tradesman and Warlock

None of the Classic sizes interchange with the DT sizes, and the model year alone will not settle which you have. Check the sidewall or send us a photo of the placard. See finding your tire size.

Where Ram puts the pressure label

Ram's own wording is that the proper cold tire inflation pressure is listed on the driver's side B-pillar or the rear edge of the driver's side door. The B-pillar is the upright post between the front and rear doors, and you see it by opening the driver's door and looking at the body rather than at the door edge.

This is the pattern across the full-size trucks. Chevrolet, GMC and Ram all use the pillar, as do Nissan, Subaru and Tesla. Toyota and Honda use the door jamb. If you have been looking at the door edge on a Ram and finding nothing useful, turn ninety degrees.

Reading it

The label carries the cold pressure for the front axle, the cold pressure for the rear, the original tire size and the spare. Cold means the truck has been sitting rather than driven. Tires warm as they roll and the pressure rises with them, so a warm reading is high.

We publish no PSI figure for the Ram 1500 because Ram does not publish one either. The manual explains what cold inflation pressure is, warns about underinflation and then sends you to the label, for the same reason as every other truck maker: with six fitments from a 17 inch Classic tire to a load range E Rebel tire, no single number is right. Replacing fewer than four

Ram's replacement guidance is to replace tires as front or rear pairs, using equivalent size, quality and performance, and not to fit a different size or rating. Ram publishes no numeric tread-depth tolerance for its four-wheel-drive trucks. What changes on a mobile Ram fitting

• The spare lives under the bed on a cable winch, reached through an access hole between the lower tailgate and the bumper. Mopar says the winch is for the jack extension tube only and that power tools can damage it, so the impact gun stays in the van.
• Stow the spare valve stem down and facing rearward so its pressure can be checked without dropping it. Wind up until the winch slips or clicks three or four times.
• Direct TPMS, with sensors built into each valve stem. Where a matching full-size spare is fitted it carries a sensor too, but it is only monitored once it is in a road position, so a flat spare will not light the lamp.
• Wheels run 17 to 22 inches across DT and Classic. The 285/45R22 fitment on Laramie, Limited and Limited Longhorn is low profile.
• The Rebel's LT275/70R18 load range E tire is stiff and high pressure, and needs a machine that suits it.
• A compact spare, where fitted, is limited to 50 mph.
• Ram's lug nut torque figure was not in the manual pages we could read, so we take it from the book in your truck rather than from memory.

Questions people ask

• Where is the tire pressure sticker on a Ram 1500? Driver's side B-pillar, or the rear edge of the driver's door. Ram names both.
• Is my truck a 1500 or a 1500 Classic? Check the sidewall size. P265/70R17 and P275/60R20 point to a Classic. 275/55R20 and 285/45R22 point to the current DT body.
• What PSI does a Ram 1500 take? Whatever your label says for that axle and tire. Ram prints no number in the manual, and a Rebel on load range E tires is nowhere near a Big Horn on 20 inch road tires.
• Can you fit one tire? Yes. Ram asks for pairs by axle, and on a 4x4 with worn tires we will say what we would do.
• Does the spare have a sensor? On trucks with the matching full-size spare, yes, but it is only monitored once it is on the road position.
