Honda Odyssey tires

An Odyssey is a heavy vehicle that spends its life fully loaded, which makes its tire pressure less forgiving than a sedan's. The good news is that front and rear take the same figure. The catch is that the figure follows the wheel, not the badge.

The sizes Honda fitted

The fifth generation runs from 2018 and was refreshed in 2021. Sizes and pressures here are confirmed on the 2023 car.

• 235/60R18 on EX and EX-L.
• 235/55R19 on Sport, Touring and Elite. This size covers the most trims.

One model, two sizes, because wheel diameter moves with trim while the van underneath does not change. Both sizes carry a high load index, which is the part that matters on a vehicle designed to carry seven or eight people plus luggage. Where the Odyssey puts its placard

The driver's doorjamb. Honda's own owner's manual describes the Tire and Loading Information label as attached to the driver's doorjamb, and says it gives the original tire sizes for front, rear and spare along with the proper cold tire pressures. Open the driver's door and look at the edge of the door opening.

How to read it once you find it

1. Cold pressure, front.
2. Cold pressure, rear. Equal to the front on this vehicle, which is a relief on something this heavy.
3. The original tire size, which tells you which of the two fitments you have.
4. The spare, printed separately and usually much higher than a road tire.

Cold means the van has been parked at least three hours, or driven under about a mile. A tire warms as it rolls and its pressure rises with it, so a reading taken after the school run is high and will mislead you into letting air out. Our tire pressure placard guide has the rest.

The verified pressures

Two independent pressure sources agree exactly on both fitments:

• 235/55R19: 36 psi front and rear.
• 235/60R18: 35 psi front and rear.

Front and rear are equal on both, so the single most common pressure mistake does not apply here. The one psi step between the fitments does. It is a small difference that is easy to shrug at, but it is the placard figure, and the placard figure is what the van was designed around. An EX on 18-inch wheels takes 35. A Touring on 19s takes 36. Look at the wheel before reaching for a gauge.

Replacing fewer than four

The Odyssey is front-wheel drive. There is no all-wheel-drive system to protect, so fitting one or two tires is a normal conversation rather than a compromise, and Honda publishes no numeric tread-depth tolerance for the vehicle.

Two new tires belong on the rear axle. The reasoning is the same on any front-drive car: more grip at the front than the rear is what makes a vehicle step out under braking in the wet, and a loaded van has a lot of weight to move. What changes on a mobile Odyssey fitting

• Honda uses an indirect, ABS-based deflation warning system on some models and direct sensors in the wheels on others. Which one your Odyssey has was not confirmed for this record, and it decides whether the job needs a sensor service or only a software reset. We check on the vehicle.
• The load index is the specification to protect. We match it rather than matching the size alone.
• Two fitments, one psi apart, so the wheel is identified before anything is inflated.
• Sliding doors and a long wheelbase mean the van needs a little more room around it than a sedan. A normal driveway or a parking bay with a free space alongside is enough.

• Where is the label? Driver's doorjamb, on the edge of the door opening. Honda's manual names that location directly.
• Does one psi actually matter on a van this size? It matters more here than on a light car, because the tire is carrying more weight and heat is what kills a loaded tire. Set the placard figure.
• Can I fit two tires instead of four? Yes, and they go on the rear axle.
• Will my tire light reset itself? Depends which system your van has, and we confirm that on the vehicle rather than guessing from the model year.
• Can I put a cheaper tire in the same size on it? Only if the load index matches. Size alone is not the specification on a vehicle this heavy.
