The mean commute in ZIP 11434 is 48.6 minutes (derived from ACS table B08013 aggregate travel time over workers who did not work at home). That is the longest of the seventeen New York ZCTAs in our research, seventeen minutes longer than the Lower East Side's 31.4 and eight past the citywide 40.3.

43.0% of working residents drive alone. 72.4% of households keep at least one vehicle (derived: 100 minus the 27.6% reporting none), 22.4% keep two and 7.5% keep three or more (derived: 5.3% with three plus 2.2% with four or more). 28.4% of units are one-unit detached — third highest of the seventeen ZCTAs in our research, behind only the two Staten Island ZCTAs.

Put those together and you have a neighbourhood where the car is not a convenience, and where losing it costs an hour each way. 68,263 people live here in 22,851 occupied units, 47.5% owner-occupied. We supply the tires and fit them where the car is parked, here and across New York. One price up front, no call-out fee.

The pavement here is among the most reported in the city

11434 filed 2,410 Street Condition / Pothole requests over 2021 to 2025, rank 7 of the 224 non-null incident ZIP values in that window, and 1,071 more from 1 January to 19 September 2026, rank 6 of 205. Both ranks are near the top of the city, and 2026 alone has already produced 44% of the previous five years' total (derived: 1,071 divided by 2,410).

Queens as a borough files more of these than anywhere else: 79,420 of the city's 207,756 Street Condition pothole requests over 2021 to 2025, 38.2% of the total from 27.4% of the population (both derived from the borough counts and ACS county populations). Per resident, though, Queens is second of the five boroughs: Staten Island files 47.3 requests per 1,000 residents against Queens' 34.2 and Manhattan's 16.0 (all derived by dividing each borough's count by its ACS 2020-2024 population).

Every one of those numbers is a reporting rate. It mixes how much damage there is with how likely people are to call 311, and it is not a measurement of pavement condition. Nobody publishes a street condition index for New York that we could read, so we are not going to give you one.

Where the van works, and the two proxies we are allowed to use

There is no driveway or off-street parking variable in the American Community Survey, and no New York City dataset we could reach publishes one. So, two labelled proxies and no estimate:

  • Housing type. 28.4% of units are one-unit detached and 10.5% one-unit attached, against 9.1% and 7.2% citywide. A further 24.9% are in two-unit buildings. This is a low-rise neighbourhood with a lot of private frontage.
  • Commercial garages. 6 active NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection "Garage & Parking Lot" licences carry an 11434 address, rank 74 of the 156 ZIP strings holding at least one, out of 1,761 active licences citywide. That is a count of businesses, not of bays.

Neither number tells us about your address, which is why we ask. The requirement itself is short: level, paved, legal ground with clear room to work at one corner of the car. Merrick Boulevard, Linden Boulevard and Guy R. Brewer Boulevard are through routes and not working locations; the residential streets off them almost always are.

The mobile trade is based on your doorstep, and it still is not free

Of the mobile installers we found quoting New York City on 2026-09-20 across two directories, every one is based in Brooklyn or Queens — none in Manhattan, the Bronx or Staten Island. One of them, Tire Pro / Tire Pro-Go, has its base in Springfield Gardens 11413, the ZIP next to this one.

Their published rate card charges $120.00 as a mobile service fee per visit plus $35.00 a tire to mount and balance a 60-series tire, and Tire Rack itemises their total for four Michelin CrossClimate2 in 225/65R17 on a 2020 Toyota RAV4 AWD LE at $320.00, sales tax excluded. The same company publishes a different fee for one part of the city, verbatim: "Mobile Fee for Manhattan under 62nd street is $220, due to congestion, limitedparking in addition to extended install time." Being close to the van's base is worth something; you can read exactly how much in their own price list.

Fixed shops nearby quoted the same job at $152.00 (Auto Tech Pitstop, 11434), $161.96 (Merrick Tire Center, 11434) and $134.00 (Cross Island Tire & Wheel, 11429). None of those figures includes New York's 8.875% sales tax, which Publication 718 applies to all five boroughs and which Tax Bulletin ST-40 applies to the fitting labour as well as the parts.

The inspection rule that is worth an hour of your time

Every vehicle registered in New York State is inspected annually, and tread is measured: 15 NYCRR 79.21(c) rejects any tire "worn to less than 2/32 of an inch of major tread design at the two worst adjacent points at which the gauge readings are obtained".

The fee rule underneath it is the useful part. Under 79.7(c)(6), a vehicle that fails and is not removed from the station is reinspected free; DMV's own checklist adds that a reinspection more than thirty days later requires a full inspection in both categories, safety and emissions, whichever one you failed. In New York City the regulated maximum is $10.00 for the safety inspection and $27.00 for the OBD II emissions test, because all five boroughs sit inside the New York Metropolitan Area as Part 79 defines it — $37.00 in total (derived by adding the two capped maxima in the section 79.7(c)(1) schedule), against $21.00 upstate (derived the same way: $10.00 plus $11.00). Failing twice is expensive here in a way it is not in Albany.

What we do not do

We supply the tires we fit. Fitting customer-supplied tires was withdrawn on 2026-09-20 and is not available at any price. No alignment, no rotation on its own, no balancing on its own, no brakes, no emergency roadside. If the only ground at your address is unpaved or sloped, we will say so before you pay.

Our price

A mobile puncture repair is $145 for the first tire and $50 for each extra tire on the same visit, subject to on-site inspection, with no separate call-out fee. Wheel off, tire demounted and inspected from the inside, plug and patch fitted the way the tire industry requires, remount, rebalance, TPMS reset where the vehicle supports it, refit. Not repairable, no repair charge.
