One bad tire on an AWD car: repair, match, or replace?
One damaged AWD tire does not always mean four new tires. Check repairability, your vehicle's tire rule, and the actual match before you buy.

One damaged tire on an AWD car does not automatically mean four new tires. An internal inspection may allow a repair. If it cannot be repaired, the vehicle maker's rule and the actual tire match decide whether one, a pair, or a full set is suitable. Do not order by tread depth alone.
Start with the damaged tire
If the vehicle is not safe to drive, stop in a safe place. Do not drive on a flat tire to reach a fitter. A puncture in the tread area may be repairable if it is no larger than 1/4 inch (6 mm), but the tire must come off the wheel for an inner-liner inspection. The repair must fill the injury and seal the liner. A plug from the outside is not enough. USTMA's repair procedure also excludes overlapping repairs and damage that reaches the shoulder. The technician must decide after inspection; a photo cannot approve a repair.
HopTire's scheduled mobile puncture inspection and repair is $169 for the first tire and $50 for each additional tire in the same visit. If a technician attends and the tire cannot be repaired, HopTire keeps $99 for the visit and inspection and refunds the rest of the repair charge. Replacement needs your approval and a separate price. See the repair service or repair-versus-replace guide.
If repair is not possible, check the vehicle rule
Find the tire section in the manual for your exact year, make, model, and trim. Record any approved front/rear size difference and the maker's replacement instructions. USTMA warns that even small outside-diameter differences on AWD vehicles can cause mechanical problems, and that the vehicle maker's instructions take priority. There is no universal tread-depth tolerance that approves one new tire for every AWD system.
For one concrete example, the 2025 Ford Bronco Sport manual recommends replacing all four instead of mixing significantly worn tires with new ones to avoid AWD damage. It also says a front or rear pair can generally be replaced if the remaining tires have usable tread. That is one model's guidance, not permission to apply its rule to another car. It gives no universal numerical tolerance.
Bring a useful match record
| Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Year, make, model, trim, and the exact manual instruction | AWD systems and approved fitments differ. |
| Door-placard size and ratings for both axles | Some cars have different approved front and rear tires. |
| Brand, model, size, load index, and speed rating on all four fitted tires | A nominal size alone does not prove a suitable match. |
| Tread depth at each wheel, measured by a tire professional | The difference informs review; it does not approve fitment by itself. |
| The damaged wheel position and whether the tire was driven flat | Internal damage can rule out repair. |
Photograph the placard and each tire's markings while the car is safely parked. The tire-size guide shows what to capture. If the manual is unclear, ask the vehicle maker or a qualified tire professional to confirm the rule and the proposed tire. Check the exact tire model and, where the maker requires it, rolling circumference. An approved staggered setup needs its own review.
Choose the next action
- Repair first, when the inspection permits it. This preserves the existing matched set and avoids a tire purchase.
- Consider one supplied new tire only after review. The exact product, vehicle rule, measurements, and fitment must all support it. HopTire does not auto-approve a one-tire order from a form answer.
- Review a pair or four when one will not match. The vehicle maker's instructions, tire condition, and a professional fitment check decide the quantity. Do not buy four solely because the car has AWD.
Tire shaving can be a way to match tread depth in some cases, but HopTire does not advertise shaving or customer-supplied tire fitting. Ask a qualified specialist whether it is available and permitted for your exact tire and vehicle. A used tire is not a default substitute.
For new tires HopTire supplies, installation uses one local visit charge plus a per-tire charge for one to four tires. Mounting, balancing, old-tire disposal, and tax are included in that installation total. The new tire product is priced separately. We cannot compare the one-, two-, and four-tire bills until the exact tire products, ZIP, and approved count are known. See installation and local rates or start a supplied-tire request. You see the total before payment. Payment sends a priced request; HopTire confirms the technician and visit window separately.
